The Detroit Lions are preparing to return next season, a year after falling one game short of their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Detroit could begin their offseason by compensating one of their best offensive weapons with a large payday. According to NFL analyst Cam Marino, the Lions are considering a contract extension for standout wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Throughout his three-year NFL career, St. Brown has led the Lions in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns every season. The two-time Pro Bowler trailed only Tyreek Hill and CeeDee Lamb in catches and receiving yards during the 2023 season.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, the 112th pick in the 2021 NFL draft, was named first-team All-Pro last season after recording 119 receptions, 1,515 yards, and ten touchdowns. St. Brown opened the season with six catches for 71 yards in his team’s upset victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. He also scored touchdowns. The USC product had at least 100 yards and a touchdown until Week 11, when he fell five yards short of the century against the Green Bay Packers. After a three-week stretch of mediocre play, St. Brown caught seven passes for 112 yards and scored against the Denver Broncos in mid-December.
St. Brown finished the regular season with four straight receiving touchdowns. He had 32 receptions for 452 yards and four touchdowns during that time. The 24-year-old made his postseason debut in 2023, catching seven passes for 110 yards in a close victory over the Los Angeles Rams. He followed up on his playoff debut with eight receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. St. Brown, who also had 1,000 yards in 2022, caught seven passes for 87 yards in the Lions’ heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship.
Amon-Ra St. Brown has one year remaining on his four-year, $4.2 million rookie contract, but the Detroit Lions are expected to extend him this offseason. According to initial reports, the NFC North club will seek a three-year extension worth $25 million per year for their star pass-catcher. Only Miami’s Tyreek Hill, Rams standout Cooper Kupp, Las Vegas’ Davante Adams, and Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown earn at least $25 million a year. However, Minnesota Vikings superstar Justin Jefferson could reset the receiver market this offseason with a historic payday.
Meanwhile, rumors have circulated that quarterback Jared Goff’s contract could be extended this offseason. Goff, like St. Brown, will be entering the final year of his current contract in 2024. Goff had an outstanding season, throwing for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. During his three-year tenure with the Lions, he has thrown 78 touchdown passes and 27 interceptions.
