Dan Quinn, the Dallas Cowboys’ former defensive coordinator, was once their most popular coach. All you have to do is recall the defense’s disastrous season under Mike Nolan in Mike McCarthy’s first season, and then consider Dan Quinn’s miraculous performance the following season.
Quinn was an aggressive coach with a great rapport with his players, and he exuded a certain swagger that drew the fanbase in. However, he also produced on the field. Under Quinn, the Cowboys’ defense improved to become one of the best in the NFL. Their ability to steal the ball at a rapid pace became their calling card. Players like Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland thrived.
But there was a drawback to that defense. Teams with strong running games could destroy the Cowboys because Quinn was constantly moving players around and disrupting the defensive line. This resulted in a strong pass rush while also opening up lanes for the opposition’s running game. The undersized personnel in certain positions only exacerbated the problem.
The defense struggled down the stretch of the 2023 season and was defeated by the Green Bay Packers in the wild card playoff game. That seemed to break the spell for fans. Because when we asked you how the defense would perform under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer versus Dan Quinn, the response was overwhelming. 80% of respondents believed it would be better.
That represents a very high percentage of positive responses. Zimmer’s previous success, familiarity with Dallas and the Jones family, and ability to field a balanced defense have piqued the interest of Cowboys fans. Now, let’s hope everyone is correct.
