The Malachi Moreno sweepstakes appears to be gaining traction among North Carolina basketball fans.
In late January, the UNC basketball UNC basketball coaches contacted Great Crossing (Ky.) junior Malachi Moreno. And, as Rivals’ David Sisk noted, the Tar Heels followed up by sending assistant Sean May to watch the 7-foot-1, 220-pound renowned center play on Tuesday night.
Moreno, a four-star talent with exceptional quickness and instincts for his size and ranked No. 35 overall on the 247Sports 2025 Composite, undoubtedly impressed May.
After all, in Great Crossing’s 72-49 home triumph over Walton-Verona, he scored 26 points on 13-of-15 shooting from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds in 27 minutes.
Malachi Moreno has over two dozen offers, including one from a blueblood recruiting juggernaut in home-state hopeful Kentucky. Meanwhile, he has already visited several potential suitors, including the Wildcats, and has stated in recent interviews that a decision may be made as early as June.
So, if UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis and his staff want to be in the mix, they’ll need to add Moreno to their 2025 wishlist sooner rather than later.
So far, the Tar Heels have officially targeted nine high school juniors. They’re all five-star performers with top-15 aggregate rankings.
However, it is worth noting that UNC’s offer sheet, while filled with power forwards, does not yet include a center. Given the Moreno show that May witnessed this week, perhaps that won’t last long.
