The NRL is expected to penalize Adam Reynolds and Pat Carrigan, the Brisbane Broncos’ celebrity combination who were filmed in a scuffle on a night out.
Broncos captain Reynolds and vice-captain Carrigan have apologized for their altercation, which was revealed when video evidence circulated on social media.
While Brisbane did not sanction the couple, the league’s integrity section stepped in and gave the pair five business days to reply to claims of violating the NRL’s code of conduct.
“Both players are alleged to have engaged in a physical altercation in public, which has brought the game into disrepute,” the NRL said in a statement issued Friday afternoon.
“The NRL has reminded other players involved in the incident of their responsibilities under the NRL Code of Conduct.”
Fellow athletes Reece Walsh and Payne Haas were seen in additional footage playing small roles in the brawl, although they are not charged with violating the code.
Any punishment for Reynolds and Carrigan would keep them out of the Broncos’ season-opening game against the Sydney Roosters in Las Vegas on March 3.
Brisbane will play a trial game against North Queensland on Sunday in Mackay, with Reynolds and Carrigan set to start.
Prior to the infringement letters, Brisbane coach Kevin Walters downplayed the event.
“We had a hiccup on Sunday evening. It was also done in-house, with no outside help,” he remarked.
“All they’ve done is hurt themselves and the brand more than anyone else in the public.
“We won’t be suspending them … it’s out of our hands now and into (the NRL’s).”
