The Alabama Crimson Tide football team celebrated its first A-Day under new coach Kalen DeBoer on Saturday, offering the fans a first look at the new offensive and defensive philosophies being introduced at the Capstone.
The DeBoer offensive design places a lot of responsibility on the quarterback, but it also allows him to shine by creating mismatches in the pass patterns, which lead to opportunities for explosive, momentum-building plays.The backup quarterback’s day began with a free rusher in his face off the edge, and Red Morgan immediately moved into the backfield. Simpson gets a little thrown off by the play call since the play-action roll puts him in a direct contact with Morgan. He makes the right decision to toss the ball away rather than take a horrible sack on first down.
A short run off the right side results in third and six for Simpson to tackle. The redshirt sophomore saw Cole Adams’ matchup with safety Brayson Hubbard and found him for a 20-yard pass to keep the chains moving. Simpson does an excellent job of shifting in the pocket to provide himself enough space to complete the first down throw and get his day started.Carries by Richard Young and Daniel Hill keep the offense rolling and set up Simpson’s next play on first and 10. This incompletion is one Simpson would wish to have back because he arguably left a good pocket and fired a pass that may have been intercepted. Simpson responds to the edge pressure by stepping up into the pocket, but this is an overstep that puts him in greater danger. His course correction forced him out of the pocket, where he exacerbated the problem by failing to recognize a safety scrambling into coverage and underthrowing his downfield target.
