DETROIT (AP) — Lucas Raymond scored 4:35 into overtime after tying the game with 1:17 left in regulation to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night, keeping their playoff chances alive.
Detroit drew iron on two attempts in overtime before Raymond’s shot from the right circle beat Sam Montembeault.
Brendan Gallagher scored twice, and Montembeault stopped 30 shots for the Canadiens, who led 4-1 late in the second period after scoring two goals early on.
J.T. Compher trimmed the Red Wings’ deficit to one goal midway through the first period and added another late in the second. Alex DeBrincat scored midway through the third to make it 4-3.Detroit made up for Alex Lyon’s two goals on the first three shots he saw by surrendering two more goals in the second period and ended with 17 saves against a squad that was out of postseason contention.
The Red Wings had made the playoffs for 25 consecutive seasons, the third-longest streak in NHL history, which ended in 2016 when they played at Joe Louis Arena.
Fans eager to cheer on a playoff squad again packed Little Caesars Arena for the final regular-season game at home.
Lane Hutson, a 20-year-old defenseman from Holland, Mich. making his NHL debut, set up Gallagher’s first goal. Justin Barron scored a goal less than two minutes later.
