I’m continuing my series of Oregon Ducks position previews ahead of spring football, which starts next week. If you haven’t already, check out my quarterback preview, which has three interesting new players joining the team this spring.
Today I’ll focus on Carlos Locklyn’s running backs, moving on from Bucky Irving, a two-year starter who competed in last week’s Scouting Combine and is now pursuing an NFL career.No. 6 is expected to be healthy for the first time since 2023, when an injury versus Colorado halted his season after only four games. Whittington may be the fastest of the four, but he doesn’t lack force, as he doesn’t back down from contact and battles for every yard.
He was listed on the 2023 roster as 5’8″, 208 pounds, a big weight gain over 2022, but it was healthy weight that didn’t slow him down. If anything, it made him more productive, as he has been since he arrived on campus, following Carlos Locklyn from Western Kentucky.
Whittington is the most experienced option on the squad, but I’m not quite sure he’s cementedIf you had never seen Jordan James play before last season, you could watch an Oregon game and persuade yourself he was a junior who had been with the program for a while.
It’s surprising to realize that the Tennessee native is already entering his true junior season with the Ducks. As a true freshman, he established himself as the team’s short yardage and goal-line back and was eager to take on the extra runs made possible by Whittington’s injury last year.
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound runner was a big reason the Ducks kept running after Whittington went down, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. I appreciate his sense of
