A crucial component of the Las Vegas Raiders’ special teams will return for the 2024 season.
Ameer Abdullah, the club’s running back, has been re-signed, the club stated on Friday. The 30-year-old veteran is the second-oldest running back on the team’s current roster and will be in his tenth NFL season.
Abdullah played the previous two seasons with the Raiders, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in March 2022. He has played in every game for the Silver and Black since, totaling 19 rushing yards, 342 receiving yards, one receiving score, and 543 yards on 26 kickoff returns. Last season, Abdullah had 131 receiving yards on 19 receptions and 89 running yards on 15 attempts.
After four years at the University of Nebraska, Abdullah was taken in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He would spend more than three seasons with Detroit, totaling 1,251 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns, 420 receiving yards, and three receiving scores. As a rookie, Abdullah led the league in kickoff returns (37) and yards returned from kickoffs (1,077).
Abdullah finished the 2018 season with the Minnesota Vikings, where he played two more seasons and six games in 2021 before being released and signed by the Carolina Panthers. Abdullah’s only NFL start came for the Panthers.
Abdullah has accumulated 1,683 running yards, six rushing scores, 1,207 receiving yards, eight receiving touchdowns, and 3,487 yards on 142 kickoff returns. He is second among active players in terms of career kickoff return yards and kickoff returns. Abdullah has done this in 45 fewer games than the leader, Cordarrelle Patterson.
The NFL Draft will take place in Detroit, Michigan, on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the 13th overall pick.
