Detroit’s six-game winning streak has drawn global notice, but the Red Wings are still focused on the work that needs to be done.
The Red Wings enter tonight’s game with the New York Islanders on a six-game winning streak.
Following Patrick Kane’s return to Chicago on Sunday and subsequent heroics, as well as Tuesday night’s offensive explosion against the Capitals, Detroit has received more national attention than at any other time since Steve Yzerman returned in 2019 to manage the team he once led to three Stanley Cup victories.
The laudatory media is certainly enjoyable for the Red Wings, and it would be tough not to enjoy the way the team has been playing during the new year, but the squad’s collective emphasis remains firmly on the work that has remained to be done.
“We just have to keep working and living day by day,” Alex Lyon stated yesterday. “I believe it is critical that we should not overestimate our capabilities. We still have a lot of games remaining, so we just need to keep doing the right things.”
When asked about the increased national media attention over the last week, Jake Walman told The Hockey News after this morning’s skate, “I haven’t really noticed it too much. We’ve kinda just been going about business…It’s nice to get a little bit of recognition from the NHL, around the league, and see some people are talking about the Right Wings now. Hopefully just play our game, get into the playoffs, and hopefully that’s where we can make our mark.”
Walman made it plain that while this time of year inevitably brings excitement and intensity, Detroit would not be pleased with that alone, stating, “We have playoff implications, and we can really somewhat see the finish line, but at the same time, we haven’t accomplished anything. I believe the guys in the room are as hungry as ever.”
According to Alex DeBrincat, who has five goals and five assists in his last eight games after a slow start to the calendar year, the Red Wings’ current run of form has inspired confidence throughout the lineup, but what stands out the most is Detroit’s ability to win without relying on a single game script.
