The Flyers have placed goalkeeper Cal Petersen on waivers.

Felix Sandstrom is expected to be recalled from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms after a roster slot became available when Jamie Drysdale was placed on injured reserve.

Petersen has been backing up rookie Sam Ersson since Carter Hart was placed on vacation and demoted to non-roster status following his role in the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault investigation.

While Ersson has arguably been the better goalie of the three this year, with a 17-11 record and a.901 SV% in 33 games, head coach John Tortorella has stated several times that giving the Swedish rookie adequate rest time is critical after he was unexpectedly thrust into the No. 1 goaltending position.

Petersen has been much less consistent in the NHL, with a 2-2 record in four starts and a.864 SV%, and his most recent performance against the Pittsburgh Penguins left supporters skeptical of his NHL abilities.

The Flyers lost 7-6 in Pittsburgh, and many were frustrated with Petersen’s positioning, alertness, and other parts of his game that allowed the Penguins to score a touchdown. The prevailing judgment was that Petersen was not made out for the top level.
