Gators in hot races with wildcats to sign

GAINESVILLE, Florida – No. 4 Florida defeated Bethune-Cookman, 9-2, at Condron Family Ballpark on Wednesday night.

Tyler Shelnut led the offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Colby Shelton (2-for-4) also homered and led the team with three RBIs. On the mound, Robert Satin dazzled with three shutout innings of relief in his first career win.

The game opened with a scoreless first inning from starter Fisher Jameson, allowing the Gators (6-2) to score four runs against the Wildcats (4-4) in the bottom half. Michael Robertson walked to lead off the inning, Jac Caglianone pushed him to third with a single to right, and the former scored on a wild pitch. With two men on, Shelton hit his third home run of the season, putting Florida up 4-0.

Jameson held the Wildcats scoreless until the third period, when he was replaced by Satin with two men down. Satin promptly knocked out Jorge Gonzalez-Febo, blanking Bethune-Cookman through three.

Before the inning was over, Shelnut hit his third home run of the season. On a 1-2 pitch with two outs, Shelnut hit a solo shot off the batter’s eye in center field to make it 5-0.

Shelnut added a sixth run in the fifth. Luke Heyman singled with two outs, and Shelnut added an RBI double to center field.

Satin pitched three shutout innings before being removed in the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Blake Purnell stranded the runners, preserving the Gator advantage. Purnell returned to the mound in the seventh and worked around a two-out hit-by-pitch for a zero.

Bethune-Cookman scored in the eighth inning. With two men in scoring position and two outs, Peter Vazquez blasted a two-run pinch-hit single to right to cut the UF advantage to 6–2.

Right-hander Alex Philpott entered and reduced the damage in the eighth inning, allowing the Gators to respond. Caglianone did just that, launching a three-run blast down the right field line to make the score 9-2.

Philpott fired a scoreless ninth to seal the victory for the Orange and Blue. He allowed one hit and one walk in two innings, striking out two.

Satin (1-0) won his first game by pitching three shutout innings with one hit and two walks, striking out four.

Jameson did not factor into the decision, pitching 2 2/3 shutout innings on three hits and two walks. He fanned three Wildcats.

Dylan Dudones (1-1) took the loss after giving up five earned runs in three innings. He was charged with four hits, two walks, and one strike.

Caglianone (2-for-5), Shelton, and Shelnut each had multiple hits in the win.
