According to reports, the Philadelphia Flyers are working on a contract extension for veteran defenseman Nick Seeler ahead of the 2024 NHL trade deadline.
TSN’s Darren Dreger revealed on the latest episode of “Insider Trading” that the Flyers are attempting to keep Seeler beyond this season.
“Most of the talk around the Philadelphia Flyers is on right-shot defenseman Sean Walker, but Nick Seeler has been out there from the get-go as well,” he said. “However, management will confirm in Philadelphia, as will agent Pat Brisson, that they have engaged in contract extension discussions.”
This is obviously significant news for the Flyers’ trade deadline plans; both defensemen were expected to be moved for the majority of the season, and at one point, an interested team reportedly inquired about trading for both players simultaneously.
Seeler is a beloved teammate, highly regarded in the locker room, and adored by the Flyers’ coaching staff. It’s no surprise that Danny Briere and his teammates have taken steps to keep the 30-year-old on the team for the foreseeable future.
On the ice, Seeler leads the NHL in blocked shots (168). Calgary Flames defenseman Chris Tanev, who is also being heavily pursued on the trade market, is a close second at 162. From the Flyers’ perspective, this could be an instance in which Seeler is more valuable to them than to other teams.
Seeler’s $775k cap hit makes him an appealing piece for teams looking to eat into their LTIR relief or are otherwise close to the salary cap ceiling, but was anyone willing to pay Philadelphia’s asking price?
If there was an asking price, it appears that the Flyers said ‘No’.
